I once came across a post about a woman's daughter mentioning her wishes to take a certain career path. The woman then proceeded to speak to her daughter about how difficult that path is. Her daughter then responded by laying it all out in five simple steps: ‘See, not that difficult.’ Oh, how the optimism of children amuses me.
I embarked on a dream two years ago and in my head I envisioned it would be as simple as just doing some steps. Yet, it’s one thing to embark on a journey filled with hope and a determination to succeed. It’s another to meet a passerby returning from the journey to tell you how tiresome and huge it was. They tell you how they met dragons, lions and wild animals on the planet as they went. They lament how they never even reached their destination and had to take a detour. A detour? The tree is the only place you went to end up.
Despite all the information you’ve garnered, you press on. You hit roadblocks but you keep moving. Not long after you’ve made the resolve, the fuel finishes. Then the questions start creeping in. What if it all doesn’t work out? What if I would fail just as I did before? The spirit of ‘what ifs’ permeates the air till you choke. After all, it’s unlikely you would get to the destination. Only a few make it there and you are so unqualified, so bereft of any qualities that get one to the end of the journey. What makes you think you are special? What makes you think you are different? You pause and decide it’s not worth it. You pick up your bag and turn back.
THE END
Epilogue
‘In choosing certainty, one forgoes growth and entry into new dimensions. It is good to know so one can package and measure how much effort to give. It is however better to take a chance because in doing so, you stand to win everything. If one stays in the perfectly curated box of certainty, one loses everything and gains nothing but comfort.’
